Over/Under 0.5 to 4.5 goals: what does each line mean?

An Over/Under goals bet asks whether a match has more or fewer total goals than a line, such as 2.5. Over 2.5 needs three or more goals; Under 2.5 needs two or fewer. Lines run from 0.5 to 4.5. The half goal means there is no draw on the bet: it either wins or loses.

How does an Over/Under goals bet work?

You add up the goals scored by both teams. In football (soccer in the US), a match cannot end with 2.5 goals, so a line of 2.5 always splits the outcomes cleanly. Who scores does not matter: a 3-0 and a 2-1 both count as three goals.

What does each line need?

LineOver wins if the match hasUnder wins if the match has
0.51 or more goals0 goals
1.52 or more goals0 or 1 goal
2.53 or more goals0 to 2 goals
3.54 or more goals0 to 3 goals
4.55 or more goals0 to 4 goals

The rule is simple: Over X.5 needs at least X + 1 goals, and Under X.5 allows at most X goals.

How do the chances change from line to line?

Each step up the ladder makes Over harder and Under easier. Here is a hypothetical goals estimate for one match, used to work out every line:

Total goals012345 or more
Estimated chance8%18%26%22%14%12%

The chances add up to 100%. Each Over figure is the sum of every column above the line, and each Under figure is the rest:

LineOver chanceUnder chanceFair odds Over (1 / chance)Fair odds Under (1 / chance)

1.574%26%1.353.85
2.548%52%2.081.92
3.526%74%3.851.35
4.512%88%8.331.14

For example, Over 2.5 is 22% + 14% + 12% = 48%, and Under 2.5 is 8% + 18% + 26% = 52%. Fair odds are what the price would be with no bookmaker margin. Real odds are a little shorter, because the bookmaker builds in a margin. The guide on implied probability shows how to read that margin from the odds.

Notice the symmetry: Over 1.5 and Under 3.5 both come out at 74% here. That is a feature of this example, not a rule.

Which line suits which kind of match?

  • 0.5 and 1.5. Most matches clear these, so the odds on Over are short. Under 0.5 is a bet on a 0-0.
  • 2.5. The most common line, often close to an even split, so both sides tend to be priced near 2.00.
  • 3.5 and 4.5. Over needs an open, high-scoring game. Under 3.5 and Under 4.5 are short-priced bets against a goal rush.

A short price does not make a bet good value. Compare your own estimate with the odds, the way the confidence score guide explains.

What about lines like 2.0 or 2.25?

Some bookmakers also offer whole lines, such as 2.0, where exactly two goals returns your stake, and quarter lines, such as 2.25, which split your stake across two neighbouring lines. These work differently from the half-goal lines above and their rules vary by bookmaker, so read them carefully before betting.

What settlement rules should you check?

  • Regular time only? Most goals markets count 90 minutes plus stoppage time, not extra time or penalties, but check.
  • Own goals normally count towards the total.
  • Abandoned matches are handled differently from one bookmaker to the next.
  • First-half lines count only goals before the break, like a half-time bet.

Where WIN Betting fits

WIN Betting, a football predictions app for iOS and Android made by MICOM TECH, covers Over/Under from 0.5 to 4.5 goals. On every match screen, these lines appear among the alternate markets ranked by probability, next to the recommended pick and its confidence score. Each probability is an estimate, not a promise, and the app is not a bookmaker, so your bookmaker’s own rules decide how a bet settles.
