What are alternate markets in football betting?
Alternate markets are the bets available on a match beyond the main result. They include both teams to score, Over/Under goals, double chance, clean sheet, corners, cards and handicaps. They let you back a view on how a match will go, not just who wins, but each one still needs to be judged on its probability and its price.
Why look beyond the match result?
The main market in football (soccer in the US) is 1X2: home win, draw or away win. It is simple, but it forces one question: who wins? Often you have a clearer view on something else. You might expect goals at both ends without knowing who will come out on top, or expect a tight, low-scoring game. Alternate markets let you bet on that view directly.
What are the main alternate markets?
| Market | What you are betting on | Example selection |
|---|---|---|
| Both teams to score (BTTS) | Each side scores at least once | BTTS Yes |
| Over/Under goals | Total goals above or below a line | Over 2.5 goals |
| Double chance | Two of the three results | Home or draw (1X) |
| Clean sheet | A team concedes no goals | Home clean sheet |
| Corners | Number of corner kicks | Over 9.5 corners |
| Cards | Yellow and red cards shown | Over 4.5 cards |
| Handicap | Result after a goal start or deficit | Home -1 |
| Half-time and HT/FT | Result at the break, or at both points | Draw/Home |
Goals lines are covered in detail in Over/Under 0.5 to 4.5 goals. Corners and cards have their own settlement quirks, explained in corners betting.
Is the most likely market the best one?
Not on its own. Markets with a high probability usually have short odds, and markets with long odds usually have a lower probability. The useful question is whether the price is high enough for the probability.
A quick check: multiply the estimated probability by the decimal odds. Above 1 means the price is better than the estimate requires; below 1 means it is worse. Here is one hypothetical match, with alternate markets listed from most to least likely:
| Market | Estimated probability | Decimal odds | Probability × odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home or draw (1X) | 78% | 1.30 | 0.78 × 1.30 = 1.014 |
| Over 1.5 goals | 76% | 1.30 | 0.76 × 1.30 = 0.988 |
| Under 3.5 goals | 70% | 1.40 | 0.70 × 1.40 = 0.980 |
| BTTS Yes | 58% | 1.80 | 0.58 × 1.80 = 1.044 |
| Home win | 54% | 1.95 | 0.54 × 1.95 = 1.053 |
On these numbers, the two most likely markets are not the most attractive prices. Home win and BTTS Yes are less likely, but their odds pay more than the estimate requires. If the estimates are wrong, so is this conclusion, which is why a confidence score is a starting point, not a verdict.
To turn odds into the chance they suggest, divide 1 by the odds: 1 / 1.95 = 51.3%. The guide on implied probability goes further.
How do alternate markets relate to each other?
Many of them overlap, which matters if you combine them:
- BTTS Yes and Over 1.5 goals. If both teams score, there are at least two goals, so BTTS Yes winning means Over 1.5 wins too.
- Home win and home or draw. A home win also wins the 1X double chance.
- Clean sheet and BTTS No. If either team keeps a clean sheet, BTTS No wins.
Putting linked selections from the same match on one ticket does not spread your risk the way picks from different matches might. Some bookmakers restrict these combinations or price them differently.
What should you check before betting an alternate market?
- The exact rules. What counts as a goal, corner or card, and whether extra time counts, varies by bookmaker.
- The line. Over 2.5 and Over 3.5 are very different bets, even on the same match.
- The price against your estimate, using the check above.
- Team news, since line-ups shift goals and cards markets as much as the result.
Where WIN Betting fits
WIN Betting, a football predictions app for iOS and Android made by MICOM TECH, shows alternate markets on every match screen, ranked by probability, beside the recommended pick, its confidence score and the match result and double chance odds. Markets include BTTS, Over/Under 0.5 to 4.5, clean sheet, corners, cards, handicap, half-time and half-time/full-time. The probabilities are estimates, not promises, and the app is not a bookmaker.
