What is a half-time/full-time bet?
A half-time/full-time (HT/FT) bet is a single bet on two results: who leads at half-time and who wins at full-time. Both parts must be right. There are nine possible outcomes, such as Home/Home or Draw/Away, so the odds are longer than a plain match result bet, and so is the risk.
What are the nine HT/FT outcomes?
Each half-time result (home lead, draw, away lead) can be paired with each full-time result (home win, draw, away win). That gives 3 × 3 = 9 outcomes. The first part is the half-time result, the second is the full-time result:
| Outcome | At half-time | At full-time | Example scores (HT, FT) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home/Home | Home leads | Home wins | 1-0, 2-0 |
| Home/Draw | Home leads | Draw | 1-0, 1-1 |
| Home/Away | Home leads | Away wins | 1-0, 1-2 |
| Draw/Home | Level | Home wins | 0-0, 1-0 |
| Draw/Draw | Level | Draw | 1-1, 1-1 |
| Draw/Away | Level | Away wins | 0-0, 0-1 |
| Away/Home | Away leads | Home wins | 0-1, 2-1 |
| Away/Draw | Away leads | Draw | 0-1, 1-1 |
| Away/Away | Away leads | Away wins | 0-1, 0-2 |
In a bookmaker’s list you may see these written as 1/1, X/1, 2/1 and so on, using the same codes as a match result (1X2) bet: 1 for home, X for draw, 2 for away.
How does an HT/FT bet pay out?
It works like any single bet: stake × decimal odds. Suppose you stake £10 on Draw/Home at odds of 5.00. The match is 0-0 at half-time and finishes 2-1 to the home side. Both parts are right, so you get £10 × 5.00 = £50 back, a profit of £40.
If the home side had scored before the break and still won, the result would be Home/Home and your Draw/Home bet would lose, even though you picked the right full-time winner. That is the main trap of this market.
Why are HT/FT odds longer than match result odds?
Because one full-time result is split into three outcomes. A home win can arrive as Home/Home, Draw/Home or Away/Home. Here is a hypothetical match, with estimated chances for each outcome and the “fair” odds those chances imply (1 / probability):
| Outcome | Estimated chance | Fair odds (1 / chance) |
|---|---|---|
| Home/Home | 30% | 3.33 |
| Draw/Home | 18% | 5.56 |
| Away/Home | 4% | 25.00 |
| Home/Draw | 6% | 16.67 |
| Draw/Draw | 14% | 7.14 |
| Away/Draw | 5% | 20.00 |
| Home/Away | 3% | 33.33 |
| Draw/Away | 12% | 8.33 |
| Away/Away | 8% | 12.50 |
| Total | 100% |
Add up the home rows and you get 30% + 18% + 4% = 52%, the estimated chance of a home win in a normal match result bet. The draw rows give 6% + 14% + 5% = 25%, and the away rows 3% + 12% + 8% = 23%.
How do you tell if an HT/FT price is good?
Multiply your estimated chance by the odds on offer. Above 1 means the price is better than your estimate needs; below 1 means it is worse. Using the estimates above:
| Bet | Estimated chance | Odds offered | Chance × odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home win (1X2) | 52% | 1.85 | 0.962 |
| Home/Home | 30% | 3.20 | 0.960 |
| Draw/Home | 18% | 5.00 | 0.900 |
| Draw/Away | 12% | 9.00 | 1.080 |
On these numbers, the longer Draw/Home price is actually worse than the plain home win, while Draw/Away looks generous. Bookmakers usually build a bigger margin into markets with many outcomes, so it is worth checking each price instead of assuming that longer odds mean better value. Of course, everything depends on whether your estimates are right.
When might people consider HT/FT?
- A strong favourite that often starts fast might suit Home/Home, which pays more than the plain win.
- A favourite that tends to start slowly might suit Draw/Home.
- Matches expected to be tight early can make Draw/Draw worth a look.
Comebacks such as Away/Home do happen, but they are rare, which is why they are priced so long. Like corners and cards, HT/FT depends on the timing of events, which makes it harder to predict than the full-time result alone.
What settlement rules should you check?
Rules vary by bookmaker, so read them before betting. Usually:
- Half-time means the score at the end of the first half, including first-half stoppage time.
- Full-time means 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs are normally excluded.
- Abandoned matches may be void, or settled if the result is already decided, depending on the bookmaker.
