How do you judge a betting tipster's record?
Judge a tipster on the full record: every pick, the odds taken and the stakes, over hundreds of bets. The key number is profit divided by total staked, called yield. A high win rate means little on its own, because short odds can win often and still lose money over time.
Why is win rate not enough?
A tipster who says “we won 7 of our last 10” is telling you only half the story. What matters is the odds those picks were at. Football (soccer in the US) favourites at short prices win often, but each win pays little, so a few losses can wipe out many wins.
Every price has a break-even win rate: the share of bets you need to win just to get your stake back. It is 1 / decimal odds:
| Average odds | Break-even win rate (1 / odds) |
|---|---|
| 1.50 | 66.7% |
| 1.70 | 58.8% |
| 2.00 | 50.0% |
| 2.80 | 35.7% |
| 4.00 | 25.0% |
A tipster winning 55% of picks at average odds of 1.70 is below break-even. A tipster winning 40% at average odds of 2.80 is above it. The second record looks worse and is actually better.
How do you compare two tipsters fairly?
Use the same unit stake for every pick and work out the yield: profit divided by total staked. The guide on ROI and yield covers this in detail. Here are three hypothetical records, each staking 1 unit per pick:
| Tipster | Picks | Winners | Average odds of winners | Returns | Profit | Yield |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 100 | 55 | 1.70 | 93.5 units | −6.5 units | −6.5% |
| B | 100 | 40 | 2.80 | 112 units | +12 units | +12% |
| C | 20 | 12 | 2.00 | 24 units | +4 units | +20% |
The maths for B: 40 winners × 2.80 = 112 units back, minus 100 units staked = +12 units, and 12 / 100 = 12%. For C: 12 × 2.00 = 24 units back, minus 20 staked = +4 units, and 4 / 20 = 20%.
C has the best yield, but only 20 picks. That is far too few to tell skill from luck. A couple of results going the other way would turn it into a loss: with 10 winners instead of 12, C would get back 20 units from 20 staked, a yield of 0%.
How many picks do you need to see?
There is no magic number, but the more the better. A few dozen picks can be explained by luck. A few hundred picks across different weeks, leagues and markets start to say something. The longer the average odds, the more picks you need, because results at long prices swing more.
Be wary of records that start at a convenient moment, such as just after a good run, or that quietly drop older months.
What should a trustworthy record show?
- Every pick, including losers. A list of winners is advertising, not a record.
- The odds at the time of the pick, posted before kick-off. Odds that were never really available make any record look better.
- The stake for each pick. Varying stakes after the event, such as “big stake” on winners only, distorts results.
- The market. A record mixing 1X2, half-time/full-time and accumulators should show each separately.
- Losing runs. Every honest record has them.
Are losing runs a red flag?
Not by themselves. Losing runs are normal, even for good picks. If every pick had a true 50% chance, the chance of losing a given set of five in a row would be 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 = 3.1%. Over hundreds of picks, a run like that is very likely to happen somewhere.
What is a red flag is a record with no losing runs at all, or a tipster who raises stakes to win back losses. That points to a record that has been edited, or to poor bankroll habits.
What other warning signs should you look for?
- “Sure bets” or “guaranteed wins”. No football outcome is guaranteed.
- Pressure to pay quickly, such as “only three places left”.
- Only screenshots, with no full list you can check.
- Huge yields over a short time. Even strong records rarely look like that over hundreds of bets.
- No explanation. A pick with reasons, such as a confidence score and the stats behind it, is easier to judge than a bare tip.
Where WIN Betting fits
WIN Betting, a football predictions app for iOS and Android made by MICOM TECH, includes AI tipster profiles. These are not real people: each one is an AI with its own betting style, such as safe low-odds picks, balanced odds, goals markets or bold accumulators. Their picks and results are tracked in the app, so you can apply the checks above: look at the full record, the odds and the number of picks before you put any weight on a profile. Treat it as information, not a promise.
