What is a handicap bet in football (European handicap)?

A handicap bet gives one team a virtual head start or deficit in goals before kick-off. In a European handicap, the adjusted score decides the bet and there are three outcomes: home, draw and away. With Home -1, the home side must win by two or more goals for a home handicap bet to win.

Why do handicap bets exist?

In football (soccer in the US), many matches are uneven. When a strong side plays a weak one, the plain match result can be priced so short that it barely pays. A handicap evens things out. The favourite starts “behind” by one or more goals, or the underdog starts “ahead”, and the bet is settled on the score after that adjustment.

The favourite then pays longer odds than in the plain 1X2 market.

How does a European handicap settle?

Take a hypothetical match where the home team is given a -1 handicap. You add the handicap to the home team’s goals, then compare the adjusted score. There are three possible bets: Home (-1), Draw (-1) and Away (+1).

Final scoreAdjusted score (Home -1)Home (-1)Draw (-1)Away (+1)
3-02 : 0WinsLosesLoses
2-01 : 0WinsLosesLoses
2-11 : 1LosesWinsLoses
1-00 : 0LosesWinsLoses
1-10 : 1LosesLosesWins
0-2−1 : 2LosesLosesWins

The key row is the one-goal home win. Without the handicap, it is a home win. With Home -1, it becomes a handicap draw, so a Home (-1) bet loses and the Draw (-1) bet wins. Away (+1) wins whenever the away side avoids defeat.

Bookmakers write this in different ways, such as “Home -1”, “Handicap 0:1” or ”(-1)”. Always check which team the handicap applies to before placing anything.

How is a European handicap different from an Asian handicap?

A European handicap uses whole goals and keeps the draw as a separate outcome, so it behaves like a three-way 1X2 market on an adjusted score.

An Asian handicap removes the draw. It uses half and quarter lines, such as -0.5 or -0.75, and on whole-number lines a tied adjusted score usually returns the stake instead of losing it. Quarter lines split the stake across two neighbouring lines.

Settlement rules for both types vary by bookmaker, especially on naming, quarter lines and what happens if a match is abandoned. Read the rules of the site you use rather than assuming they match this guide.

What does a worked example look like?

Imagine these hypothetical European handicap odds for a home favourite at -1:

OutcomeDecimal oddsImplied probability (1 / odds)
Home (-1)2.4041.7%
Draw (-1)3.6027.8%
Away (+1)2.7536.4%

A 10-unit stake on Home (-1) at 2.40 returns 10 × 2.40 = 24 units if the home side wins by two or more, a profit of 14 units. A 2-1 or 1-0 home win, a draw or an away win all lose the stake.

Add up the implied probabilities: 1 / 2.40 + 1 / 3.60 + 1 / 2.75 = 1.058, or about 105.8%. The extra 5.8% above 100% is the bookmaker’s margin. The guide on implied probability explains how to strip it out to get a fairer estimate for each outcome.

When does a handicap make more sense than the plain result?

A handicap is a different question, not a better one. It suits a view such as “the favourite will win comfortably”, which the plain result cannot express. The trade-off is clear in the table above: a narrow one-goal win, which still counts as a home win in 1X2, loses a Home (-1) bet.

The opposite view works too. Away (+1) wins if the underdog draws or wins, which is similar to a double chance bet on the away side. The guide on comparing betting markets shows how to weigh markets like these against each other by probability and price.

What mistakes do people make with handicaps?

  • Reading the sign the wrong way round. A minus handicap is a deficit; a plus handicap is a head start.
  • Forgetting the handicap draw. In a European handicap, a win by exactly the handicap margin is a draw, not a win.
  • Mixing European and Asian rules. Refunds and half-wins are Asian handicap features and do not apply to European lines.

Where WIN Betting fits

WIN Betting, a football predictions app for iOS and Android made by MICOM TECH, includes handicap among its alternate markets. Each match shows the main pick with a confidence score and other markets ranked by the app’s probability, so you can see how a handicap line compares with the result, double chance or goals markets. The app is not a bookmaker, so check each bookmaker’s handicap rules before betting.
